Lesley Kehoe Galleries is currently hosting Tsutsugaki and Yuzen painting artist Shumei Kobayashi’s latest exhibition entitled ‘Threads of Significance’. The exhibition will run from August the 3rd to September the 2nd this year and showcases many works bearing personal significance to Kobayashi, while also reflecting not only upon nature, but human nature as well with pieces with the themes centering around waterfalls and rope.
Tsutsugaki is an art practice where without a stencil, the artist paints directly onto fabric. Kobayashi’s paints are more often than not made with natural materials such as rice and is starting to develop his own natural pigments using coffee or eucalyptus and often works with materials such as hemp, fine silk and linen as a base.
The night prior to the exhibition’s opening, Lesley Kehoe Galleries held a VIP early viewing of the exhibition where a number of Kobayashi’s dear friends attended, along with a number of artists or art buyers who seemingly had a taste for Japanese art. One of Kobayashi’s biggest supporters, Lesley Kehoe, along with other friends and supporters of Kobayashi made an opening speech to introduce the exhibition as well as the artist himself along with some of the ideas behind his works as well as his individual pieces, encouraging attendees to take a closer look at some of Kobayashi’s rope works and see if any of the images resonated with them.
Kehoe also made note of Kobayashi having the great honour of receiving a highly esteemed artist visa and obtained permanent residence in Australia, so hopefully we will be able to enjoy many more of Kobayashi’s gorgeous and touching exhibitions in future.
