Starting today, ACMI is running a nine day long season of anime film screenings, highlighting the adventures of some of the most inspiring anime heroines in film. And it’s definitely an event you won’t want to miss!
These fearless, resourceful and resilient heroines have driven some of the most acclaimed and popular films of this genre.
The films being screened include memorable titles such as ‘Spirited Away’, ‘My Neighbour Totoro’, ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ and ‘Princess Mononoke’, as well as some newer titles such as ‘Summer Wars’ and ‘Arrietty’.

‘Arrietty’ is a gorgeous film about a very adventurous tiny girl who sets out to broaden her horizons and explore outside of comfort zone.

You also get the chance to see the classic Studio Ghibli film ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ on the big screen. It’s a good chance to see this much-loved classic in the cinema, or introduce someone to it. For those who haven’t seen the film, it tells the story of two young girls and their interactions with friendly woodland spirits.

‘Princess Mononoke’ is a beautiful and gripping film that follows a fierce forest princess and her struggle between the forest gods and humans who seek to destroy the forest.

‘Spirited Away’ is another Studio Ghibli classic that is well loved all over the world, follow Chihiro as she explores a world very different to the one she knows.

Being one of the newer films of the selection, ‘Summer Wars’ has a very unique animation style when compared to the rest, but is nonetheless just as visually gorgeous as it is entertaining.

And the last of the line up is ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’, which as the name suggests focuses on time travel and takes a look at friendship and how it changes.
