English Japanese
Shibari (or kinbaku) is the Japanese art of tying people in a way that gives a good feeling whilst being aesthetically beautiful.
There are many reasons why people do shibari. These include:
– doing suspensions for aerial performances
– tying purely for the aesthetic beauty of a tie
– using rope as a means of communication between partners
Over the next few months here on Japan In Melbourne I’ll discussing the many aspects of shiabri, with my next column looking at the major historical influence of hojojutsu, a martial art used by the samurai to bind prisoners.
I hope you will enjoy learning more about shibari.
