The Japanese Summer Festival is back in Docklands on the 11th February 2012! The first Festival was held in February 2010 and was a huge success with over 5,000 attendees. In 2011, there were more than 10,000 attendees, double that of the previous year. We believe, this year, the Festival will be more successful!
Before we proceed to the event information, some background information about the Festival maybe informative. Japanese Summer Festival, a.k.a. Natsu-Matsuri, is an annual festival held during summer all across the country where people flock to soak up the carnival atmosphere and take part in activities such as the Bon Odori dance performed by dancers in Yukatas. And the Festival here in Melbourne is not only an entertaining event, but also a cultural exchange opportunity between Australia and Japan. It's a celebration of multiculturalism in Melbourne.
Apart from Bon Odori dance, the program of this year also includes Taiko Drumming performed by Wadaiko Rindo, Shamisen Performance given by Tadano Group, Murasaki no Kai's Dance Performances, and Sumo Wrestling. If you are not particularly into dancing or the performances, you could simply enjoy all the stalls, Japanese traditional games, Japanese snacks, food and drinks. The Festival is a community-based event for everyone, so you will surely find something for you in the Festival.
